Sustainable growth is no longer just a goal for Europe. It is the ultimate aim. Europe is now on the verge of change. It needs to use all the unlimited creativity it has to achieve the right solutions for sustainable growth.
As it was determined by the participants of the European Research and Innovation Days event in Brussels during September, the first year of Horizon Europe in terms of structure and priorities will define and support the research and innovation programme to the maximum.
During the event, Carlos Moedas, the Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation said:
‘’The dedication, energy and creativity of the participants in the European Research and Innovation Days are truly inspirational. Their contributions are invaluable for securing the success of Horizon Europe’’
Here are some of the most notable points that were raised during the event’s co-design sessions and meeting:
- Broad support for the orientations for strategic planning for Horizon Europe’s first four years, which have been co-designed in the run-up to the Research and Innovation Days;
- A strong call to Europe to take the lead on creating solutions for sustainability;
- Transform Europe’s unlimited creativity into solutions and marketable products and services, which can be shared with the rest of the world.
The event was a complete success and the key points mentioned above, along with more than 6000 responses from the ongoing Horizon Europe online co-design consultation are a direct feed to the Horizon Europe strategic planning process.
It appears that the second pillar of the Horizon Europe financial framework, ‘’Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness’’ is the main focus for the planning of the entire programme. That focus will create the very first Horizon Europe Strategic Plan (2021-2024). It is the aim of the plan to identify major policy drivers and strategic policy priorities as well as targeted impacts that will need to be achieved and identify the missions and European Partnerships.
The political agreement on Horizon Europe was reached in April 2019 by the European Parliament and the Council. Based on that agreement the Commission started to prepare for the implementation of the programme, as well as the strategic planning process.
However, the legal bases of the Horizon Europe programme, have not yet been settled by the co-legislators. By following the progress of the inter-institutional path, the European Commission will be able to finalize the first Horizon Europe Strategic Plan 2021-2024
