EU Budget 2021-2027
There is good news coming from that front with the highly anticipated end of 2020. 2021 marks the beginning of a new era in European funding with the end of the 2014-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework (WFF) and the dawning of the 2021-2027 MFF. The EU funding programmes 2021 will have combined funds of €1.8 trillion, which is significantly higher than the previous budget.
For the year 2021, the budget has been set at €164.2 billion. Specifically, this budget will be widely used to alleviate the effects of COVID-19 and support the EU’s sustainable recovery through the green and digital transition.
What Changes with EU Funding Programmes 2021?
The budget has been enlarged with the EU Funding Programmes 2021 with the €750 billion of Next Generation EU for 2021-2023. This European initiative’s binary purpose is to distribute the funds to cover the damages caused by the pandemic while focusing investments on the green and digital transformation of Europe. These funds will be available through various European programmes that will focus on Europe’s recovery and resilience.
Nevertheless, to support the sustainable recovery of the EU, new funding programmes will see the light of day. For example, Digital Europe will be the main program to see the large-scale digital transformation in Europe. This programme is set to receive 20% of the Next Generation EU budget as expected to impact the digital economy in the following years significantly.
Another vital funding programme is the EU4Health that will aim to improve public health. This is a new programme that the COVID-19 made it necessary to build on the lessons learned from this pandemic and improve the observed inefficiencies.
