This article provides crucial insights into the significant changes in the Erasmus+ programme and the newly launched calls for 2024. As one of Europe's most sought-after EU funding programmes, Erasmus+ allocates substantial resources for Education and Training, Youth, and Sports. The planned changes to Erasmus+ in 2024 will affect numerous organisations throughout Europe. If prioritising the Erasmus+ funding programme is on your agenda for 2024, delve into this blog to understand the nature of these changes and their implications for your organisation and learn about the new Erasmus+ calls in the coming year.

What is Changing in the 2024 Erasmus+ Programme?

1. The Erasmus+ 2024 Budget Increases

The more available budget is always good news as there are more EU funding opportunities, and the impact is more significant. The Erasmus+ budget for the 2024 work programme will be higher by about 5% than 2023 and considerably higher than that of 2022. To get into details, the available budget for 2024 is €4.395 billion, while the 2023 budget was approximately €4.170 and the 2022 budget almost €3.900, respectively. As a reminder, the Erasmus+ total budget for the multiannual financial framework 2021-2027 is €26.2 billion, plus €2.2 billion from EU external instruments.

2. New Restrictions on Participation

Based on the 2024 Erasmus+ Programme Guide, there will be some limitations on how organisations participate. Here is a short overview of these changes:

  1. Applicant organisations must be legally established at least 2 years before the Erasmus+ call application deadline.
  2. Applications submitted to National agencies in school education, vocational education and training, adult education and youth cannot exceed 10 overall applications in a deadline, either as applicant or partner. This maximum applies to all applications submitted in the above fields.

However:

The limit of 10 applications per deadline DO NOT apply to HE, Sport and Cooperation partnerships submitted by European NGOs.

3. New Priorities Are Set

Both horizontal and sectoral priorities change yearly to best align with the developments in Europe and worldwide. As such, the Erasmus+ horizontal priorities for 2024 are set as follows:

New Horizontal Priorities

  • Inclusion and diversity in all fields of education, training, youth and sport
  • Environment and fight against climate change
  • Digital transformation through the development of digital readiness, resilience and capacity
  • Common values, civic engagement and participation

New Sectoral Priorities

  • Higher Education: A new priority is added to support Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in their cooperation with their counterparts in Ukraine to respond to the ongoing war in the country.
  • School: Two new priorities are added. One relates to promoting interest and excellence in STEM and the STEAM approach, including fostering girls' interest in STEM. The other is to support the response of European education and training systems to the war in Ukraine.
  • VET, Adult, Youth: Similar to school, the new priority here in all three sectors is to support the response of European education and training systems to the war in Ukraine.
  • Sport: The priorities here remain the same as in 2023. To learn more, there is an upcoming Info-day Sport in Brussels and online on January 30, 2024.
