In 2020 it was made clear to everyone that European Governments were not sufficiently prepared to deal with a pandemic of the scale of COVID-19. Indeed, this was not only an issue observed in the European Union, but it was instead a global phenomenon. Luckily for Europe, through the EU Health Programme 2021-2027, the Union has set ambitious targets for the new decade to prevent a similar pandemic from paralyzing the European economies.

Notably, it plans to mitigate the adverse effects of COVID-19 in the following years and build quality and resilient health systems. It is the best time to invest in the European health systems, based on the shortcomings of the national health systems that this pandemic brought to light.

EU4Health Programme

This new EU Health Programme 2021-2027 is a dedicated stand-alone programme specifically designed to combat the effects of COVID-19 and apply the lessons learned. EU4Health kicked off early in 2021 and has earmarked a budget of 9.4 billion EUR.

EU4Health will focus its activities on developing the quality healthcare standards at a national level of EU members. The Union hopes that doing so will prevent future major cross-border health threats like an epidemic. The programme will also limit Europe’s dependence on essential medical supplies, devices, and equipment from third countries. Finally, healthcare systems will be better prepared to deal with long-term challenges like the ageing population and health inequalities.

Other essential functions of this new EU Health Programme 2021-2027 are that its budget will go towards health promotion campaigns. These campaigns will address the risks associated with harmful habits like the use of alcohol or tobacco. To avoid what happened with COVID-19, the EU will also support communication activities to counter misinformation and promote a healthy lifestyle.
