An Interview with Areadne Teaching Center from Greece

1. Give us some information about your organization

Just like the mythical princess Areadne equipped and trained Theseus to exit the labyrinth after exterminating the Minotaur, Areadne is a teacher training centre creating solutions like teacher training courses, curricula, etc that enable modern heroes like teachers, trainers and other educational staff to deal with Minotaurs (class-level issues like student diversity and inspiring sustainable practices) and face-up to labyrinths (society-level issues like unemployment and drop-out rates).

2. What inspired you to create your organization?

Areadne was created by active teachers and teacher trainers looking to create teacher-friendly solutions. We do not base our practice on urging teachers to do more (more preparation, longer lesson plans, etc) or on excuses like schools not having unlimited resources. The question on our minds is: how can we do things smarter without passing the bucket to teachers and without hiding behind the scarcity of resources?

3. What is the field of your expertise?

Literacy, multiliteracies and transformative learning as the basis through which we can deal with a number of issues in the classroom without burdening the teacher or the school budget. When it comes to practical skills: educational ICTs, designing and implementing teacher training courses, designing and implementing courses for adults/students/the general public, disseminating to / activating our teacher network.

4. What is your organization’s impact on society?

We have trained over 1,000 EU teachers and over 1,500 teachers in Greece and have created several resources for them. Hopefully, we have contributed to the class experience and achievement of thousands of students in Greece and abroad.

5. What are some of your most important collaborations on EU Projects?

They are all important.

6. What is something your organization achieved that you are proud of?

Creating solutions that help teachers deal with one of the most difficult things to deal in a classroom: negative attitudes (e.g. Tooe Project ).

7. What kinds of projects do you want to work on?

Projects that involve teachers and teacher training.

8. What is it that you are looking for, from an EU partner?

Generally: to be able and to want to do the work involved. Specifically: its skills must fit the project in question.
