Ocean Mission: The Plan to Restore our Ocean and Waters [+ EU Funding Opportunities]

The world faces severe challenges on all fronts that threaten to alter our way of living severely. In some cases, and especially if left unchecked, human life costs will be tremendous.

There is no better time to find solutions to these world problems than now. Europe has been making strides in becoming a global champion for the changes the world needs.

The Ocean Mission is one of the five bold European initiatives, or EU Missions, whose ambition is to bring tangible results by 2030. The EU missions are a novelty of Horizon Europe for 2021-2027 that want to turn research and innovation’s focus towards finding solutions to world challenges.

This article’s focus will be on the Ocean Mission. Let’s find out what this mission is about and EU funding opportunities to restore and protect our aquatic ecosystems.

What is the Ocean Mission?

The Ocean Mission will help achieve the water targets of the European Green Deal. Some of these targets include the protection of 30% of European seas, the restoration of marine ecosystems and 25,000km of rivers.

One of the Ocean Mission’s core objectives is to end water pollution. Some examples of how the Ocean Mission plans to achieve that are reducing plastic litter at sea, nutrient losses, and chemical pesticides. The ultimate goal is to make the blue economy climate neutral, and circular with net-zero maritime emissions.
