The 2018-2020 Horizon 2020 Work Programme, included many a plethora of different Energy topics. Fifteen of them opened up for application on September 3rd, 2019 and they are making available EU Funding of 297 million euros in total.
Out of those fifteen topics, nine are related to RES aka renewable energy solutions. The other six will be covering topics like smart and clean energy for consumers, smart citizen-centered energy systems, smart cities and communities, and smart airports.
These projects will be under a single-stage evaluation selection for funding. The deadlines to submit the proposals for the RES and the EC-ES-SCC calls are December 11th and January 29th accordingly.
Here is a list of the topics available for submissions for RES: Deadline December 11th, 2019
- LC-SC3-RES-9-2020: Next Generation of thin-film photovoltaic technologies. Budget: 20 million euros
- LC-SC3-RES-19-2020: Demonstration of innovative technologies for floating wind farms. Budget: 25 million euros
- LC-SC3-RES-33-2020: Increase the performance and reliability of photovoltaic plants. Budget 20 million euros
- LC-SC3-RES-35-2020: Reduce the cost and increase the performance and reliability of CSP plants. Budget 10 million euros
- LC-SC3-RES-28-2018-2019-2020: Market update support. Budget 25 million euros
- LC-SC3-RES-27-2020: Demonstration of advanced biofuels production from aquatic biomass. Budget 10 million euros

- LC-SC3-EC-3-2020: Consumer engagement and demand response. Budget 16 million euros
- LC-SC3-ES-3-2018-2020: Integrated local energy systems (energy islands). Budget 15 million euros
- LC-SC3-ES-4-2018-2020: Decarbonising energy systems of geographical islands. Budget 40 million euros
- LC-SC3-ES-5-2018-2020: TSO-DSO-Consumer: Large-scale demonstrations of innovative grid services through demand response, storage and small-scale (RES) generation. Budget 22 million euros
- LC-SC3-ES-10-2020: DC-AC/DC hybrid grid for a modular, resilient and high RES share grid development. Budget 14 million euros
- LC-SC3-ES-11-2020: Rapid relief through transitions on islands. Budget 4 million euros
- LC-SC3-ES-12-2020: Integrated local energy systems (energy islands): international cooperation with India. Budget_0 9 million euros
- LC-SC3-SCC-1-2018-2019-2020: Smart Cities and Communities 55 million euros
- LC-SC3-SA-1-2020: Smart Airports 12 million euros

By going to the Funding opportunities portal, you will be able to submit your proposals, electronically. On that website, you will be able to find all the necessary information needed as well as the guidelines you will need to follow to submit your proposal for evaluation.
Application requirements
On each individual call page, you will be able to find the requirements your proposal will need to fulfill to pass the evaluation. You are also advised to consult the general annexes of the Horizon 2020 Work programme for 2018-2020. Through the annexes, you will gain access to all the general rules for funding like the list of countries eligible to apply for funding, the standard eligibility criteria, the different submission rules, the different types of projects under the programme as well as their funding rates and much more useful information.
Grants awarded process
The external evaluators chosen to evaluate the proposals are part of the European Commission’s database. After submitting your proposal you will receive the evaluation results at the latest five months after the submission deadline. If your proposal passed the evaluation and your project has been accepted for funding you will sign the agreement within eight months after the submission deadline.
