The first LIFE call for proposals 2021 launched on July 13th under the updated LIFE programme 2021-2027. Specifically, interested applicants to the LIFE programme can apply to four sub-programmes: Nature and biodiversity, Circular economy and quality of life, Climate change mitigation and adaptation, clean energy transition. With the LIFE programme 2021-2027 total budget of €5.4 billion, these LIFE calls offer 580€ million to fund new projects.

Nature and Biodiversity
Nature and Biodiversity sub-programme aims to protect and restore Europe’s nature and halt the rapid biodiversity loss. As a result, it will provide funding to all projects relevant to nature conservation, particularly in biodiversity, habitats, and species.
Additionally, this sub-programme help in the implementation of the EU Birds and Habitats directives, as well as the management and development of the Natura 2000 network. Finally, It will help reach the EU’s biodiversity strategy for 2030, which is part of the EU Green Deal.
Circular Economy and Quality of Life
The LIFE call for proposals 2021 under this sub-programme aim at promoting the transition towards a sustainable, circular, toxic-free, energy-efficient and climate-resilient economy and at protecting, restoring and improving the quality of the environment.
Mainly, you will find co-financed environmental projects in the circular economy or dealing with waste, water, air, noise, soil and chemical management, as well as environmental governance.
Climate change mitigation and adaptation
As Europe’s goal is to become a climate-neutral region until 2050, this sub-programme will help the EU reach that goal. The LIFE call for proposals 2021 under Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation will contribute to Europe’s sustainable development. EU funding will help Europe become an energy-efficient, renewable energy-based, climate-neutral and resilient economy.
This sub-programme will finance projects that relate to farming and land usage, the management of peatlands, renewable energy and energy efficiency. As far as climate change adaptation is concerned, that involves all projects on urban adaptation, infrastructure resilience, sustainable water management, flood and coastal management, and agricultural, forestry and tourism sector resilience.
Clean Energy Transition
The LIFE Clean Energy Transition builds on the success of Intelligent Energy Europe (2003-2013) and Horizon 2020 Energy Efficiency (2014-2020) programmes. With a budget of almost €1 billion for the 2021-2027 period, it will fund projects promoting energy efficiency, a climate-neutral and resilient economy through coordination and support actions (Other Action Grants) across Europe.
The five areas of intervention of the LIFE Clean Energy Transition are in the following five areas:
- Building a national, regional and local policy framework supporting the clean energy transition;
- Accelerating technology roll-out, digitalization, new services and business models and enhancement of the related professional skills on the market;
- Attracting private finance for sustainable energy;
- Supporting the development of local and regional investment projects;
- Involving and empowering citizens in the clean energy transition.
